A dreamer and maker of things
I am a freelance costume designer based in Nottingham, UK (originally from Scotland but relocated for love!) I graduated in July 2005 as a mature student with a degree in Performance Costume and have since been finding my way in this world as a new businesswoman!! I was previously a nurse working with people with learning difficulties so it is so refreshing to be able to use my artistic skills in my career and I still can't believe my luck at being able to call this my job!!
After completing a business course in May 2006 I have slowly but surely been preparing to start my business - Gilfling's Designs and can now say I am a full time self employed person!
As a costume designer my experience to date has mostly been working in independant film (nothing famous yet but I am constantly sending ever-hopeful CV's and If you are a world famous film director or producer I would love to hear from you!!! I also do some teaching with various groups and also costume commission work.
MY INSPIRATIONS AND IDEAS
Although I love working with historical costumes my real interest is in researching and designing original work and bringing my own interests and character to come up with beautifully textured and hopefully unique interpretations of a costume. My influences are many and varied, however I love to develop conceptual ideas in particular working from nature, history and archaeology, all things ancient and textured. I am also inspired by photographers such as Floria Sigismondi, Joel Peter-Witkin, poets such as Edgar Allen Poe and Sylvia Plath and visual work such as unique art dolls, puppets, textile artists, the list is endless!!
